Prodrome
The early-warning period before an episode is fully established — when small steps still work.
The prodrome is the period just before a full episode begins — the early, subtle changes that arrive before the obvious ones. Sleep gets shorter than usual. Irritability arrives earlier in the day. You answer messages faster than normal, or stop answering them at all.
It matters because it is the part of the cycle where the smallest actions do the most. An established episode usually needs treating; in the days beforehand, protecting sleep and contacting your prescriber can change how severe it becomes.
Prodromes also repeat. Yours will probably look similar each time, and the two or three signs that came first last time are worth writing down — and worth leaving somewhere the people who see you every day can find them.
