Psychoeducation
Learning about your condition so you can manage it with more confidence and less fear.
Psychoeducation is structured teaching about bipolar disorder — how episodes work, what triggers them, what the medication is doing, how to catch an early warning sign — given to you and often to your family as well.
It sounds like the least impressive item on a treatment plan. It is one of the most effective. Structured programmes, usually run in groups and usually started when someone is well, have been tested in trials and reduce relapses, most clearly on the manic side.
Part of that is practical: knowing your own pattern is what makes early action possible. Part of it is simpler than that. Much of the damage bipolar does comes from confusion about what is happening, and from arguments with the people around you that better information settles.
