Bipolar II disorder
A form of bipolar with hypomania plus depression — but never a full manic episode.
Bipolar 2 disorder (bipolar II) is defined by at least one hypomanic episode and at least one major depressive episode. Both are required — unlike bipolar 1, where a single manic episode is enough on its own.
Hypomania sits below mania by definition: at least four days in a row, no psychosis, and — the line that matters most — not severe enough to wreck how you function or to need hospital care. Milder is not the same as easier. Bipolar 2 tends to involve more time depressed, and the depression is usually what brings people to a doctor.
The highs are brief and feel good. The lows are long and do not. That combination is why bipolar 2 is so often diagnosed as ordinary depression first, sometimes for years.
